In his #1 best seller – My American Journey -General Colin L. Powell, stated an experience that highlight the fact of life that; generally, people will applaud, love and appreciate you when you tell them what they want to hear. Tell people what they need to and really ought to hear and their response is a different ball-game all together. Majority of the people will rather boo, snigger or hiss at you when you tell them what they ought to hear.

Which type of hearer are you?
In the Holy Bible, there is this account of a king who will rather hear the smooth sweet words from false prophets (that ultimately led to his ruin) rather than listen to and heed the bitter truth from God’s true prophets (that would have saved his life and preserve his kingdom). Read the story in 1Kings chapter 22. (You need to read the entire chapter to derive the full benefits and blessings of this lesson.)

Verse 8 of chapter 22;
“And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the Lord:but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.”
You ask the question, “Why will any well meaning and sound reasoning man behave this way?” I can also hear you saying, “Hmm, if I were in that king’s shoes, I wouldn’t have responded in that foolish self-destructive way.” Think again.

The Bible has this to say about the state of unregenerate men’s hearts;
John 3:19 – 21 “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are worked in God.   (KJ2000)

A lot of the time the good counsel, sound preaching and Godly admonition we received did not profit us. Why? We are not profited because we filter what we heard through our unbelief, petty prejudices, pride,  preconceptions and perceptual biases.

John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.   (KJ2000)
